The 2014 SchoolsTechOz Conference explores the essence of contemporary and future digital classrooms and schools. Over three days the event will attract over 750 delegates, who will hear from seven world renowned keynote speakers and choose from 240 engaging sessions.
In 2011 Mooroolbark College introduced an exciting and engaging eLearning journey with the implementation of a BYOD 1-1 iPad initiative for Year 7 students. This program has provided anytime, anywhere access to information and learning, equipping students with the skills they will need in the 21st century and their integration into this 24/7 global community. The iPad initiative runs over a period of two years for Year 7 and Year 8.
Why did Mooroolbark College want Year 7 and 8 to have iPads in the classroom?
Students were already using Web 2.0 technology to find and engage with information relevant to them. We wanted to further capture this enthusiasm and continue to make classroom learning relevant to the real world, as well as making their world relevant in the classroom. The iPad deployment has been stream lined with the support of Andrew Collins and the team from Network Neighborhood. The implementation was planned six months prior to roll out to parents, with Network Neighborhood and the Mooroolbark College Technical Team planning necessary upgrades to ensure that the wireless network was big enough to take 200 plus wireless devices.
To support the parent community the College runs an iPad information evening to explain the BYOD program and how parents can purchase their devices. The Network Neighborhood education team attends these events each year to support the College and answer various technical questions that the parents may have, along with offering an education iPad bundle available to purchase using the School Branded Online Store designed by Network Neighborhood. Once the parents purchase the iPad bundles Network Neighborhood conveniently deliver them to the College for parents to pick up at times suitable to them. To ensure ease of wireless access Network Neighborhood provides a BYOD solution at the start of each year for our new Year 7 students, this solution has greatly reduced the management load on the College Technical Team. The support of Network Neighborhood to the College BYOD iPad initiative has been essential to the streamline deployment and implementation across the three years of the program.
“Nepean School is a school for children with a physical disability or significant health impairment. Technology provides exciting opportunities for our students to access learning and communicate. We recently chose to invest in iPads as they offer our students easy access, they are light, portable and the range of apps available is amazing.
We purchased 15 iPads for use across the school, we set up a 1:1 program in one of secondary classes and the remaining iPads are available to be used across the school. The kids just love them! They are used across the school in Literacy, Maths, Art, Science, Communication, Leisure, Music, Homecrafts programs and more! Our younger primary students have really enjoyed practising literacy skills like spelling and reading, whilst our older secondary students use email and Safari to search the web. Teachers had the opportunity to ‘play’ with the iPads and explore the apps and plan for ways they could be used with their students.
We ran some introductory sessions for parents and shared with them the apps we had selected for our iPads. Families have found it very helpful to have the same apps on their iPads at home to support their child’s learning. We have also put regular iPad hints, tips and app reviews in our newsletter. The students just love working with the iPads! They have been so well received we recently purchased another five!
